Last week while I was in Florida I listened to a lot of talk radio and I honestly couldn’t believe what I heard.

Right now the United States is infested with Conservative talk shows that to my mind are actually damaging the country.

The likes of Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity and Mike Savage promote themselves as great Americans who want to save their country from left wing liberal, socialist underhanded Democrats.

It’s a constant onslaught of one-sided, hateful and manufactured accusations that serve to do nothing more than strike fear into those listening. Hearing these guys back to back to back is downright shocking.

And let me say this, being a right leaning conservative in Canada is nothing like being a conservative in the States and there are no radio standards in the States that call for a balanced approach like we have up here.

I almost can’t believe I’m saying this, but what’s going on in the States with conservative radio is out of hand, but at the same time, I reject the call by some liberals south of the border who are calling for stricter standards.

Those on the left would like to stifle the right by shutting them down, but that’s just as extreme as the idiots who are spewing their nonsense through the airwaves.

Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity and Mike Savage promote themselves as great Americans, but they aren’t. They’re horrible Americans are who doing their country irreparable damage by building lucrative empires through innuendo, lies and fear mongering.

But it's entertainment for some, so don’t shut them down.

Instead, use the most powerful tool in broadcasting, if you don't like it, turn it off.

Granted talk radio in the US is dominated by the right wing but the same can’t be said for their political bloggers. Its either he extreme liberal geeks saying how evil and destructive Bush is or it’s the nutjob conspiracy theorists who hate everybody. They believe the liberal and conservatives, dems and reps are all in on IT

I was discussing this with a co-worker a few weeks back and he posited that there's an actual civil war going on in the states right now between the conservatives and the less conservatives.

Funny, really, because apart from the high level of hyperbole, there's not much difference between the two US parties. It's a bit like that episode of Star Trek where Frank Gorshin plays a guy who's white on one side and black on the other who has been feuding over centuries with a guy who's black on one side - but white on the other - except on the wrong side.

It is sad that some of these hosts represent a large part of America.

Shutting them down is wrong, but I wish they would be called on their absolute hate of Democrats (just for being a Democrat) or recently John McCain. As much as I have issues with John McCain, he is being treated very poorly by the right wing nuts.

Shouting it out to Captain Phil for the "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield" Star Trek reference. And the other guy was Lou Antonio.

I loved it when they grabbed each other's throat and the screen went all static and blue. Incredibly bad special effects the kids can't relate to these days.

And when I get the "right wing hate" emails from some listeners I always urge them to travel 90 miles south and taste a little U.S. talk radio. Christ, I'm pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, I believe in social programs for people in need and I spend fifteen bucks a day handing change to people at Yonge and Dundas.

I say, lick my lilly-livered conservative poon-pole to the sociology grads who compartmentalize my beliefs into anything that Oxycotin junkie or Michael Savage vomit daily.
