Let's compare today's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with WWII.
Our forefathers went over to Europe to help countries who were being overrun by a mad man and were welcomed by all in the occupied countries. It had really nothing to do with religion. Once the "mad man" was beaten, the poeple could enjoy freedom and live in peace again.
Fast forwarding to today, the wars are all about religion and the "black gold" and they never had peace to begin with. Of course there are the people in those countries who would love nothing more than just to live a peaceful live and those are the people I feel sorry for. Unfortunately, there are just as many people who do NOT want this for various reasons and it will never change no matter how long our sons & daughters are over there trying to stabilize the situation.
For this reason only, I am questioning the involvement of our army more and more.

The main reason we're there is to prevent Afghanistan from being controlled by the Taliban. Under the Taliban, Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations could operate. That was as a threat to all other countries including Canada. We're not there for oil or for the good of Afghan women (so that they can actually go to school, get a job and not be executed for showing their face). Those are good enough reasons for us to be there.

Argie, that's what we were to believe originally.
Years have gone by since, the fact is that a lot of people in Afghanistan still worship the Taliban and still join them to fight our sons and daughters and this will NEVER change.
Also, last time I checked the AL Qaeda, and for that matter, Osama Bin Laden, are still alive and well, just look at the daily suicide bombings in Iraq, just to mention one and that will NEVER change either.
Trust me, if and when Al Qaeda decides to blow things up in Canada, they will do it whether we are in Afghanistan or not.
We would be better off to use our Army to secure and protect our own cities and make it harder for them to strike here.
Again, one part of me tells me that we are doing the right thing to send our troups over there but I do start to second guess myself a lot more frequently.

I wasn't going to waist my time to respond, but my emotions got the better of me.
First, nowhere in my posting does it say I don't support the troops. As a matter of fact I support them 100 % while they are there. All I am questioning is whether this will ever end and at what cost to human lifes. Even now I am not saying we should or shouldn't, I am just second guessing myself a lot more.
Second, I am not sure what David Suzuki and Keyoto have to do with the war in Afghanistan. But just to put your mind at ease: I disagree with Keyoto and am not a fan of Suzuki.
